When talking to local fence builders, it’s okay to not know exactly what you want. We do fences all the time so can help you figure out what will suit your residential or commercial property best. If you want to come prepared, you can consider:

Material

Have a think about how you want your fence to look and feel. What fence will best match your property? A wooden fence - painted or stained? An aluminium fence? A brick/stone wall?

Style

As a starting point, consider if you want your fence to be see-through, or a visual barrier. Have a Google, look at some fences on Pinterest, and then any good fencer can help take your brainstorm and turn it into a plan. While not all fencing products that you find online are available in New Zealand, there’ll always be something similar.
Or feel free to suggest ‘whatever is cheapest’ if you just want a standard fence and you don’t mind how your fence looks.

Length

We’ll come and measure up, but for a quick chat on the phone it’s handy to know if you need a fence roughly 5, 10, or 20 metres long. Feel free to pace it out before you give us a call.

Height/ Consent

While all fences need to be built to Building Code standards, most residential border fences under 1.8m in height won’t require consent. Your fencer will know when consent will need to be checked, which is mostly in relation to pool/waterway fences, and some road boundary fences. If you want to do your own research before getting a fencing contractor involved, you can check with Christchurch City Council.

Garden Obstructions/ Existing Fence Removal

Often an established garden can need a bit of pruning back, or an existing fence might need to be removed before a new fence can be built. Decide whether you want to DIY the removal/gardening, or just have it done for you. Often it’s easy enough for a fencer to take old fences away as their vehicle is empty after bringing materials to site.
